Wobblers and Spoons

Wobblers and spoons are traditional fish catchers. Often confused with spinners, which have rotating blades on a fixed shaft, spoons and wobblers have actions that most often swing from side to side but may be fished with rotation, much like a spinner blade. This swing varies depending upon the style of lure. For example, long thin blades have faster swings, while large wide blades have larger and slower swings as a rule. As there are always exceptions, some spoons have been developed to actually spin, much like a true spinner. It is rare to find any tackle box that doesn't have spoons or wobblers included in the lure choices.

(Hover photo for larger image.) Known for its wide, slow swing while trolling or at anchor in current. It now comes in four proven salmon catching colors. This 3" x 2 1/4" wobbler can also be effective for large trout, char, northern pike, and muskellunge. The Egg Wobbler often fishes best with a 3/0 siwash hook.

The Egg Wobbler is fished in a number of ways for King or Chinook salmon, depending upon conditions:

  • Trolling the Egg Wobbler from 1.5 to 2.0 miles per hour typically produces the best swing. It is best fished with a 6 ft. leader of 40 to 50 pound test. The Egg Wobbler can be trolled with a downrigger or weight system.
  • Fishing the Egg Wobbler from a boat at anchor is a very effective method in large rivers. Most often this lure is kept at a selected depth by using a line-counter reel, counting line "pulls" as the lure is let out, or by using a spreader or three-way swivel with a dropper line for the lead weight of a length that maintains the desired wobbler distance from the bottom.

Nearly always the Egg Wobbler is scented with anise, herring, sardine, or shrimp. We like to run a bead of scent paste along the edges of the wobbler, or cover the wobbler with transparent scent spray or oil. Don't be surprised if you catch a coho or steelhead with your Egg Wobbler while fishing for chinook!

Jack Craven, of Yaquina Bay Charters, tells Angler Innovations:"My boat, the Crackerjack, out of Yaquina Bay Charters in Newport, Oregon used several of the Legenday Products during our ocean Coho season in 2009. We caught a lot of Coho last summer and while a lot of different things worked well, there is no question the Legendary Products Spoons were very effective and usually outfished our other gear by a wide margin. The fish especially liked the red/pink spoon and the chartreuse/pink with black dots. We also found the Smart Fish to be very effective on bright days and in the middle of the day when fishing slowed down.

Late in the season we were introduced to the Wonder Set device which resets the Dipsy Diver after short strikes. This worked amazingly well and saved us a lot of fishing time. We will install these on all of our Dipsey's and I am confident this tool will increase our catch and reduce crew time -- getting people back in the water."
