Vintage Lures and Attractors

It is common among anglers to move on to different presentations and offerings to entice fish to fish to respond. As conditions change, good anglers change baits and flies and over the years often leave behind effective baits as their tackle boxes become full and time passes. Many of these traditional baits are as effective (and maybe more so!) than the current state of tackle box evolution. These vintage lures become collectors items or maybe your most effective lures.

(Hover photo for larger image.) Limited quantities available in brass, chrome, and red blades; in sizes 3, 4, 5, and 6. Made with vintage, faceted, red glass beads -- unused condition.

These spinners are old classics that have accounted for many salmon and steelhead. They are constructed with red glass beads, which makes them vintage, because those produced in the 60's were commonly made with plastic beads. These spinners still take salmon and steelhead, and, at times, are the best spinner to have in the water. They can be fished or added to your vintage fishing-lure collection.

Otto Spinner blade sizes are as follows:

  • #3  1 5/16" x 15/16"
  • #4  1 3/4" x 1 1/16"
  • #5  1 15/16" x 1 1/4"

The Les Davis Flexi-Troll is a vintage attractor in new condition. It was made with old-style red-glass beads and uniquely soldered stops on the stainless cable to position the long, oval, fluted blades. It is a great addition to a vintage lure collection; and it is a very effective attractor if you chose to fish it.

Large Rudder and Flasher -- a vintage lure.

brass/chrome

(Hover photo for larger image.)This vintage large rudder and flasher comes in solid brass, solid chrome, or half brass/half chrome. Because this is vintage, quantities are very limited.

The Large Vintage Rudder and Flasher is unusual and rare. It is truly very large and is a very effective when used for salmon and lake trout as an attractor above your lure or bait. A longer gang troll can be clipped to this lure for more attracting and noise making. I have had great success for lake trout with a large gang troll with a herring dodger directly attached to the gang troll, with a trailing fly. Such attractor arrays can be excellent on a downrigger. A rigged bait fish or lure 24 to 36 inches behind the Large Rudder and Flasher will get some attention.

The history of this spinner is a bit cloudy, but we presume it was first marketed by Boyle's, as one of the old boxes indicates. Perhaps Boyle was the designer, and the Oregon Fishing Spoon Company of Portland, Oregon manufactured it? Other boxes indicated that the Luhr's Company (now the Luhr-Jensen Co.) also marketed it. We can't help but wonder why it was marketed as the "Hart Salmon Spoon" when it is obviously a spinner, not a spoon.

The Hart Spinner has a large blade and a short shaft, making it not only spin, but also wobble. It is a unique action which may be just the thing needed to cause a salmon to strike.

They can be fished or added to your vintage fishing-lure collection.

Hart Spinner blade sizes are as follows:

  • #3  2 1/16" x 1 1/4"
  • #4  2 3/8" x 1 3/8"
  • #5  2 1/2" x 1 1/2"

These tiny little spinners with red glass beads are almost the same as Otto's Spinners, but without a hook, just a spit ring. You can add your own hook of choice. (We prefer siwash style hooks.)

These spinners are old classics that have accounted for many trout. They are constructed with red glass beads, which makes them vintage, because plastic beads replaced glass beads in the 60's. These spinners still take trout, and, at times, are the best spinner to have in the water. (If you wonder about the effectiveness of such tiny spinners in freshwater, read Fishing the Oregon Country, by Francis H. Ames.) They can be fished or added to your vintage fishing-lure collection.
