I don't know of any other lure that can claim so many huge trophy rainbow, cutthroat, lake trout, and various species of salmon as the Lyman Lures handcrafted wooden plug. Sure, lots of lures catch big fish. But when you find a lure that is the "go to" lure of trophy fishermen, you know you are onto something. This is why we feature Lyman Lures here.
Lyman Lures are very well known in Canada, and also very well known to fishing guides who specialize in trophy fish. But it is amazing how many of the sporting goods stores in the lower 48 do not stock Lyman Lures. If you haven't seen or heard of these lures, you are missing a real important lure for your quest for trophy fish.
These handcrafted wooden plugs -- with paint jobs that are fantastic -- have been around a long time. On my trips to British Columbia I have seen them in tackle shops and resorts but had never grabbed one until I picked up a few at White Elephant in Spokane, Washington. Since then, these baby's have a place of honor in my tackle box!
I loaned a couple to my good friends Larry Craven and Steve Gardner for their Diamond Lake, Oregon, trip this year. After the trip I saw Larry and he got all bug-eyed telling me about the trip saying, "Fishing was really poor (unusual for Diamond) but I put on that Lyman and I could not get all my line out before I had a fish -- non-stop!" So don't take my word for it -- take Larry’s.
But that has been pretty much my experience this past year since tying on a Lyman. When your favorite approach isn't working, tie on a Lyman!
Lyman plugs really work well with a LongLiner or a traditional downrigger; just like PB&H (peanut butter and honey). [Note: A PB&J (peanut butter and jelly) combo is a LongLiner fished with a Limit Out Bait Rig.]

Lyman Lures are available several sizes. Size #1 is 1.5 inches long. Size #2 is 2 inches; and all other sizes are also in inches (excepting Size #1).
Lyman Plugs are known to be effective for Trout, Char, Northern Pike, Muskellunge, Walleye, Perch, Crappie, and Bass (all varieties including Stripers)
Definitions:
Char = Lake Trout (Mackinaw, Grey Trout, Lakers) Brook Trout, Splake
hybrid, Dolly Varden, and Bull Trout
Salmon = Pacific species (see website tab)
Trout = Rainbow, Brown, Cutthroat
Hook changes:
I often change out the stock treble hook and add a siwash hook to a barrel swivel
and then attach the swivel to the plug's split ring. The stock trebles work well,
I just like the ease of hook removal from the fish (and net!) that a siwash allows.
For example, I like a size 8 or 10 siwash on a small barrel swivel with a size 1 Lyman. A size 2 plug takes a size 4 to 6 hook with an appropriate barrel swivel. For the larger sized Lyman's, I go with 1/0 to 4/0 siwash hooks and appropriate swivels (smallest you can get away with -- consider break strength) depending upon plug size.
One additional note:
As with all plugs, tune them. Make sure they run true. When you take a plug out
of the box, make sure all the eyes are straight. Try the plug in the water next
to the boat (while underway or in current). If the plug runs away from the boat,
turn the front eye slightly towards the boat, and conversely, if the plug runs to
the boat, turn the eye slightly away from the boat. It is easy to over correct,
so be easy.
